Yola, Opinions on Angel Olsen & RIP Chrissie Dickinson
Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot revisit their interview with British singer Yola, who is in the new Elvis film playing Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Plus they review the new album from Angel Olsen and pay tribute to music writer Chrissie Dickinson.
On Angel Olsen’s sixth album, Big Time, she leans into some hallmarks of country music, but it is not a “country album.” Jim and Greg agree this is one of her best efforts, showcasing her incredible voice which has a new confidence when compared to previous albums.
British singer-songwriter Yola made an impression with her debut album in 2019, “Walk Through Fire,” breaking stereotypes as a black British country singer. Her follow-up, “Stand For Myself,” breaks out of genre boundaries and is her best work to date according to Jim and Greg. They have a wide-ranging conversation with Yola that covers how the pandemic affected her writing process, differences between racism in the U.S. and the U.K., and her role as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the new Baz Luhrmann “Elvis” film.
Obit: Chrissie Dickinson
Music writer Chrissie Dickinson was a friend and colleague to Greg and Jim. Greg actually hired her to cover country music for the Chicago Tribune. She introduced him to the music of Miranda Lambert. Dickinson died in May at age 62.

For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
